The current virtual server annoyance I'm dealing with is that the system date of the container OS is apparently bound to the host date. That is disappointing, particularly when the host date is very wrong. I've queried support about the problem and am awaiting the reply. In the meantime, to keep my journal entry timestamps from being wildly off (the wrong day half the time), I've decided to use rdate to retrieve the correct time externally with something like this:

rdate -n -p 0.us.pool.ntp.org

UPDATE: After contacting support about my server time issue it was fixed promptly and has remained fixed. While there have been a few problems like this, they have always been resolved quickly for which I am grateful. [7/4/10]

A server glitch last night cost me the entry I was last writing when I decided to call it good for the day. I managed to get myself sick over that last several days which as negatively impacted my productivity as far as my cordage projectt is concerned. However, as I started to feel better I was still in no shape to be up and about much, so I got some things done on my computer, including getting my webpage back up and some things fixed that were broken by the server move.

My journals are working again, though sadly not the photo galleries. I was wanting to upgrade the journal code to allow greater flexibility. Indexing of individual entries would be nice--although I originally thought it was a great idea to not allow that convenience--as would commenting and logins.

We'll see how much time I manage to devote to upgrades. In the meanwhile, my contact form works again as well. Oh--titles would be another nice feature (and maybe a summary) for each entry.

The message quoted below was my welcome message for less than a day before I fixed my journal engine. I would still like to upgrade it, but since it's working now, that means that I can create this sort of message as an entry rather than a welcome message that may last a day or a decade (let's hope not). Now it will be stamped with the date and stored with the other (becoming) historic documents.

After a server failure, too long getting a replacement set up, then too long being appauled by what was broken after the move, I'm bring john.zont.org back up for public consumption. My photo gallery and journal engine are the major casuaties of the move. I'm leaning toward replacing them rather than patching them. I haven't had much time for web development for awhile now, so I won't promise anything. I have a new project flintcordage.com I've started scratching on, but that's not much yet. I want to highlight some of my projects and give people a chance to contact my about making things for them. So far, I'm not making the presentation I envision. [6/27/10]
