To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
Proverbs 1:4

God is the Source of life. He is the Creator of all things, and without Him no life is possible. God's law is the expression of His character. It is not an arbitrary set of do's ond don'ts, but rather a discription of what God is like. Separation from God is breaking His law. Sin or transgression of that law is an act of separation from God.

Our actions bear very serious consequences. Any evil, however insignificant it may seem, separates us from God and leads to death. It is because there are consequences that Christ died. He died in our place. "He was wonded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53.5) Jesus bore the brunt of our actions, all we have to do is be willing to have His sacrifice count for us. That doesn't mean that that's the only consequence of our actions. There are still other, imediate consequences that we must face. If I lie to someone, I might be forgiven by him, but the consequence of my action still has the effect of straining the relationship, and diminishing the level of trust.

God is able to grant forgiveness right now because of the consequences Christ has already met on our behalf. But even so we must still face the results of our deeds.

Truth is ultamately absolute. Good has no part with evil. But, in our imperfect state we are too blinded to see all things clearly, and so we may see much that is grey. If we could see all things as they really are, things would come into focus and the grey would disolve into distinct areas of black and white.

To say that there are no ethics to Christianity is to make sweeping generalizations that don't represent Christianity in its true light. A system that says to treat my neighbor as myself, a system that says all the law can be summed up with these words "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." & "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matt 22.37&39) is a system that knows ethics in a way none other does. If "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets" (Matt 22.40), then the law of God is no arbitrary set of what you can and can't do. Rather, it's a revelation of love. This is the character of God: God is love,
